Clinical specimen: Whole Blood/Plasma EDTA
Pathogen name:
HCV
Description:
Hepatitis C virus also known as Hepacivirus hominis. There are 6 genotypes of Hepacivirus hominis which can cause hepatitis. The amount of virus in the bloodstream at any given time is called the viral load. The HCV Quant Real time PCR is used to determine the amount of HCV (viral load) in the blood in international units per milliliter (IU/mL). This number determines whether an individual has a high or low viral load. Knowing and understanding the viral load is a crucial step in treating people with HCV.
